At Appalachian State University, Gary was a four-year letterman in both cross-country and track and field. He was the Southern Conference Indoor 3-Mile champion in 1978 and the Mountaineer's cross-country MVP that fall. At Miami Carol City High School he was All-State in cross-country with a 7th place finish and in track and field with a 3rd place 2-mile finish of 9:20.4. He was the 1974-75 Outstanding Athlete at MCCHS.

Gary has excelled at racing a variety of distances for over 30 years. His all-time personal bests include: mile - 4:17; 2-mile - 9:14; 5k - 14:44; 10k - 30:28; 15k - 46:49; ½-marathon - 1:08:13; marathon - 2:22:34.

As a Grandmaster runner his performances include: 5k – 17:11; 10k - 35:30; 15k - 55:38; 10-mile - 58:37; ½-marathon - 1:21:06; marathon - 2:59:53.

Other career highlights:
  • 2:22:34 at the 1979 Marine Corps Marathon
  • Raced five marathons of 2:30 or faster
  • Numerous race wins and dozens of age group awards from 5k to the marathon
  • 102,000+ career miles with no major injuries
  • Raced 49 marathons, including 12 at Boston
  • Only runner to finish in top ten overall at inaugural Winter Park (FL) Road Race 10k in 1978 and 30th anniversary WPRR in 2007
Gary spent over 25 years as a CPA and Chief Financial Officer but now focuses his energy on sharing his running and fitness expertise with others. He is a regular writer for several publications including Florida Running and Triathlon and the Nashville Funrunner. Speaking engagements include the 2009 Tallahassee Marathon, 2009 Melbourne Beaches Marathon, 2010 Ocala Marathon, 2010 Nashville Tom King Classic Half Marathon, 2010 Vermont City Marathon and 2010 Chicago Marathon. He is the Grandmaster Champion of the 2010 Ocala Half Marathon and 2009 Disney Marathon. He coaches runners of all ages and abilities.
